Although you’ll always want to discuss treatment with your doctor, using a home remedy for psoriasis can help relieve symptoms and make you feel better. Home remedies for psoriasis include eating the right diet, using at natural at-home items on the skin, and reducing stress to reduce the number and severity of flair ups.

One home remedy for psoriasis is a psoriasis diet. There isn’t one overall diet for everyone who has psoriasis, but the foods that you eat can affect your condition. The number one thing to remember is to eat healthy. Cut back on meat and dairy–two known triggers–and increase the number of vegetables in your diet. Include either fish or flax in your diet for Omega 3 and Omega 6. These essential fatty acids are vital in the fight against psoriasis. Supplement your diet with fish oil or flax seed oil. Keep a food diary so you’ll know which foods help or hurt your condition.

Items in your kitchen cupboard that can be applied directly to the skin can also help relieve your psoriasis. One popular home remedy for psoriasis is apple cider vinegar. Add one cup of apple cider vinegar to a gallon of water. Place a cloth in this mixture and then apply the washcloth on the area that is bothering you. This can help ease the itching.

A common cupboard item that can help is olive oil. Massage warm olive oil on your scalp or add it to your bath water. If you are out of olive oil, a cup of vegetable oil can be added to a bath in its place.

Until there is a cure for psoriasis, many people will choose to control their condition with a combination of traditional medication and at home remedies for psoriasis. A home remedy for psoriasis that studies have shown to be effective is aloe vera. It may help reduce the number of plaques and can be applied directly to the skin.

The most inexpensive home remedy for psoriasis is baking soda. You can make a topical solution by mixing 1 1/2 cups into three gallons of water. Simply soak a cloth in the mixture and apply it to your skin.

Stress can worsen psoriasis. Use breathing exercises, take up yoga, or meditate to lessen your stress and strengthen your immune system.

Psoriatic arthritis, also called arthritis psoriasis, is an illness of the skin and joints that results in inflammation. Symptoms of psoriasis are patches of skin that are raised, scaly, and red. About ten percent of people with psoriasis also develop inflammatory arthritis. When these two diseases are present it is called arthritis psoriasis.

The psoriasis and arthritis usually don’t appear at the same time. In around 80% of the cases of psoriatic arthritis, the psoriasis occurs first. Arthritis happens first in around 15%. The time between the two conditions varies for each individual, but they can appear years apart.

Arthritis psoriasis typically begins when a person is between forty and sixty. Men and women are both at risk. The exact cause of arthritis psoriasis is still unknown. There is no cure but many different treatments are present.

Some of the more commonly affected areas with psoriasis are the knees, elbows, and scalp. The joints most commonly affected with psoriatic arthritis are the ankles, knees, wrists, and hips. These joints become painful and may be swollen, red, and hot.

There are numerous treatment options to help control the inflammation, but many of them do carry severe side effects if used on a long term basis. Your doctor may prescribe corticosteroids, NSAIDs (nonsetroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), DMARDs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, TNF-alpha inhibitors, or immunosuppressant medications. TNF-alpha inhibitors and immunosuppressant medications may be prescribed for severe cases of arthritis psoriasis. Their potential for causing severe side effects must be weighed against their effectiveness.

NSAIDs include ibuprofen and aspirin and can be over-the-counter or prescribed by your doctor. They can help control swelling and pain, but have side effects if used on a long term basis. Corticosteroids are good for mild arthritis psoriasis and may be injected straight into the joint or taken orally. Again, they are usually only prescribed short-term to avoid damaging side effects. DMARDs can actually limit joint damage caused by arthritis psoriasis. DMARDs take weeks or months to work, so they are often prescribed along with a pain reliever.

Arthritis psoriasis is a serious and painful condition, but more treatments are always being developed. As with any illness, your doctor is the best source of information for the most effective treatments for your psoriatic arthritis.

Guttate psoriasis is a rare form of psoriasis that typically appears on the legs, arms, or trunk, though it can occur elsewhere on the body. Guttate psoriasis appears as small red or pink drops on the skin and is finer than the more common plaque psoriasis.

Guttate psoriasis is often triggered by a strep throat infection or a viral infection. The outbreak may occur two to three weeks after the infection. Guttate psoriasis can run in the family, but it is not contagious. While there is no cure for guttate psoriasis, an outbreak can happen only once or may reccur.

The guttate form of psoriasis is often mild and is more likely to cause irritation and itching than scarring. Although the lesions will often form on the legs and arms, they are unlikely to occur on the bottoms of the feet or on the palms of the hands.

Since guttate psoriasis tends to be more mild than plaque psoriasis, over-the-counter treatments are often sufficient. Keep your skin moisturized, especially after bathing, to prevent skin irritation. Topical steroids bought over-the-counter can also be used to control itching and inflammation.

In addition to topical steroids, your doctor may recommend phototherapy, which is artificial ultraviolet light therapy. This UV therapy is especially good at treating psoriasis that covers a large area of the skin. If the guttate psoriasis is not wide-spread, your doctor may prefer to stick with medications.

Whether or not you see your doctor, most cases of guttate psoriasis clear up after a few weeks. If the psoriasis is reoccurring or bothersome you’ll want to see your physician. If you have a different form of psoriasis and suffer from a strep throat infection, you’ll want to see your doctor to be prepared if guttate psoriasis occurs.

Guttate psoriasis is not the most severe form of psoriasis, but it should not be taken lightly. Proper treatment is necessary to keep the irritation and itching from affecting the quality of your life. Whether you see a doctor or choose to treat it on your own, an active approach will make the guttate psoriasis more easy to control while it runs its course.
